My dad's friend brought us fancy coconut nian gao (Chinese sticky rice cake) from Hong Kong.
My mom made the brown sugar one with Chinese dates. When Leslie was in college, she often mailed trays of them over to her for Chinese New Year.
After the nian gao is pan fried, it becomes crunchy on the outside and super gooey on the inside. Mmmmmm!
My mom also made yellow split pea cake. It's called cake, but it's actually like coconut gelatin with a layer of split peas in the middle.
