go fish

The Fish Bar in Chicago had the most delicious, fresh seafood to fill our bellies.  It was a quirky place with self-serve napkins and utensils and mason jars instead of cups.  It's next door to DMK Burger Bar (their menu looked good too, but we were too full to try any).  The only downside to the Fish Bar: none of the barstools have backrests so it was a little uncomfortable.

Gumbo (blue crab and andouille sausage)
Nice fat chunks of blue crab.  I always love gumbo.
Fried eastern belly clams served with tartar sauce
These little plump clams were unlike I had ever eaten before.  They're named after their protruding stomachs, but they were a little too salty for my taste.
Octopus a la plancha (black pepper, preserved lemon, olive oil, chilis)
This was immediately devoured.  Grilled to tender, zesty perfection.  I'm pretty sure we were licking the plate clean.
Maine lobster roll with celery mayo
This is the first lobster roll I've ever eaten, and it won't be the last!  One day I'll travel to the East Coast and visit all the places that the Food Network chefs rave about, but this is more than good enough to satisfy me.  They're generous with the lobster and light with the celery mayo.  Ahhhh sooo good!!!
And while we're on the topic of fish, check out the two steamed fish with green onions and ginger that my dad cooked!  This is a must-have dish whenever I'm home.

who's excited...

....for the L.A. Renegade Craft Fair?
I wasn't able to attend last year, and I missed some amazing vendors, but many of them will be back this summer and I will definitely be there to see them!

A few that I'm really looking forward to:
Cutesy but Not Cutesy (I've been a fan of her shop for a long time!)

dapht  (we have the same name!  and her jewelry is cool)

Fawa (Her work ranges from minimalistic and cute to very detailed [i.e. hand-cut self portrait stamps])

Steppie (pandas galore!)

gene and jude's

In the town of River Grove, IL, you will find Gene and Jude's, home of THE BEST hot dog in America.  Seriously!!  It was voted by Serious Eats and Rachel Ray in her magazine.
Chicago style dogs are incredible on their own, but Gene and Jude's goes above and beyond.  Their menu is simple but they frown upon any changes to it especially if you ask for ketchup.
Gene and Jude's dogs are loaded with good stuff.  They even have cute little hot dog trays to prepare them as neatly as possible.  It's also efficient and keeps the humongous line moving.
I personally love hot dogs with cheese (and I'm tempted to bring my own cheese sauce next time.  Cheese fries on a cheese dog!  Yeah!), but Gene and Jude's really hit the spot regardless.  My mom and I got the Double Dog- two Vienna Beef hot dogs that literally SNAP when you bite into them!  SOOOO GOOOOD.  I'm drooling as I look at these pictures.  We strayed away from the relish because we don't think we like it (what does it taste like?  I was too scared it would ruin the taste), but the onions, mustard, sport peppers, and fresh fries overflow with deliciousness from the bun.  The sport peppers (I had two in mine) and mustard add the perfect spice, and I normally don't care too much for onions but they were a must-have on this dog.

We devoured our double dogs in the parking lot because Gene and Jude's is just a hot dog stand, no dining area.  The dogs would've gotten soggy by the time we drove home.  A lot of people did the same; some even brought cozy picnic blankets to lay on top of their cars.

I can't wait to eat more when I'm back home in Chicago for Christmas!!!!

sweet chinese treats

My dad's friend brought us fancy coconut nian gao (Chinese sticky rice cake) from Hong Kong.
My mom made the brown sugar one with Chinese dates.  When Leslie was in college, she often mailed trays of them over to her for Chinese New Year.
After the nian gao is pan fried, it becomes crunchy on the outside and super gooey on the inside.  Mmmmmm!
My mom also made yellow split pea cake.  It's called cake, but it's actually like coconut gelatin with a layer of split peas in the middle.

1 curry, 2 curry, red curry, yellow curry

Served over rice, my mom's red curry with chicken, basil, bamboo shoots, and bell peppers is truly addicting.  She once gave the recipe to her co-worker who proudly declares that she and her daughter often live off a giant pot of this good stuff for a week.
Chinese yellow curry with chicken and potatoes.  It tastes best over rice or with flaky crispy awesome Indian pancakes!

time for tub tim thai

My mom heard about Tub Tim Thai from ABC7 Chicago food reporter Steve Dolinsky (a.k.a. The Hungry Hound).  Based on his recommendations, the restaurant created a special meal option on the menu: 2 appetizers, 1 main course, and 1 dessert.  We couldn't resist!  (The pictures I took were from my camera phone because I forgot my other camera at home, whoops).
Meang Kum: Fresh Chapoo leaves topped with roasted coconut, sun-dried shrimp, diced ginger, shallots, lime, peanuts and Thai hot pepper on the side served with its original sauce.

We were apprehensive to try this dish because we had never heard of it.  But Steve Dolinsky had reported that it was a must-have because you can't find it at any other restaurant, and boy was he right!!  This dish was the most memorable part of the meal.  You basically shove the entire thing, leaf and all, into your mouth.  It's a light and crispy flavor explosion!  I especially liked the subtle punch of the Thai hot pepper and biting into the little sliver of lime.

Thai Crispy Crepe: Thin crispy crepe filled with minced shrimp, coconut, tofu, bean sprouts and ground peanuts served with cucumber salad.

My second favorite!  Again, everything was very light and crispy.  I always get nervous when I see "coconut" in the description because I don't want it to overpower the dish, but it was the perfect undertone to the fresh bean sprouts.
Chicken salad: Ground chicken tossed with scallions, shallots, and cilantro in fresh lime sauce.

Simple and delicious!
Sizzling Salmon with Panang curry

The salmon is crispy on the outside and tender inside.  The waitress poured the curry on it tableside so we could watch and hear it sizzle.
Charcoal boiled chicken: Marinated half chicken seasoned with coconut milk and Thai seasoning.

Served with sticky rice in a cute basket!  The chicken was very tender and juicy.  This dish wasn't included in the special combo but we really wanted to try it.  Good choice!
Sweet rice with mango

Warm sweet rice and ripe mango- the perfect summer treat!

Our experience at Tub Tim Thai was greatly enhanced by our very bubbly and somewhat eccentric waitress.  Minutes after being seated, she approached us in her softspoken manner and asked if we were Thai.
       "No, we're Chinese."
"Ohhhh really?  Wow, you [me] are so cute!  Very cute!  So cute!  How old are you?"
       "I'm actually 21."
"Wowwww really?  You look very young, like 15!  High school!  Ohhhh but now you can drink! [brushes my arm]."
"Hahahahahaha!"  my mom and I laugh a little nervously, causing the waitress to squeal in more delight.
"Ahhhhh both SO CUTE!  You look like sisters!!  Maybe because you have similar haircuts.  You both look so young.  SO CUTE!!!"  [but she didn't look that much older than me so I don't know why she was obsessing over our appearances]
This continued throughout the entire meal.  It was pretty funny, but I felt like the entire waiting staff was staring at us especially when we became the only ones left in the restaurant (they serve lunch until 3 p.m. and the kitchen re-opens at 5 p.m.).  It wasn't annoying or anything, just kind of funny and strange.  And since we were the only ones left when the kitchen had closed, the waitress had to see us to the door and help us unlock it so we could leave.  Of course, she had a few parting words for us:
"Sooooo cuuuuteee.  I want to keep you both here!"  It was a little hard to understand her, but I thought she asked what school I attended.
"I go to school in Los Angeles.  I'm actually leaving tomorrow."
"Ahhhhh noooo so sad!!!  When will you be back?"
       "Probably Christmas."
"Ahhhh ok, well I'll be here forever!  I'll be waiting for you!  Ahh soooo cute!!!  What is your name?"
       "Daphne."
       "Ahh Stephanie!"
       "Haha, no, Daphne.  D-a-p-h-n-e."
"Daphne?  Ahhhh so cute!  I've never heard of a name like that before.  [to my mom] And your name?"
       "Mary.  It's easy and simple."
"AHHHHH SO CUTTTEEEE!!!!  I LOVE YOU BOTH!"
"HAHAHAHA!" [but we're both clueless as to why my mom's response was "so cute."]

Definitely an unforgettable meal!

five happy months!!!

I woke up this morning and did my normal routine, thinking about stuff I need to pack tomorrow when I fly back to L.A. and looking forward to going out to lunch with my mom, etc., when I stopped in my tracks and noticed a bouquet of fruit in the kitchen!  My dad had signed for it and it was turned the other direction in the kitchen so I didn't even notice that it was a HELLO KITTY EDIBLE ARRANGEMENT at first!  I didn't even know they made those!
Hahahaha photoshoot around the house!  I taught my mom how to use my Nikon DSLR a little.
It was hard to find a good location.  First we tried the kitchen, then the Wall of Fame (awards and stuff that Leslie and I have accumulated over the years)...
Then in the living room with our couch full of stuffed animals and in front of the entertainment system....
Back to the dining room next to a print of Mrs. Wear's amazing watercolor painting....
And finally on the living room couch.  That Hello Kitty pineapple was soooo sweet and tasty!  In fact, all of the fruits were very ripe and yummy.
Josh, THANK YOU SO MUCH for spoiling me with the bouquet, sending surprise gifts to my home, and being an amazing boyfriend for the past five months!  Mucho falafel!

death by chocolate

Day 1:  In a very hidden corner of Schaumburg, you will find a fancy little chocolate boutique called Chocolatines.  My mom heard about the luxury treats from Chef Rieko Wada because they had been featured at the Oscars and Grammys.  Upon our arrival at Chocolatines, we were greeted by a very friendly and polite assistant chef who gave us a plate full of samples.
White Gold (Champagne), Rose Gold (Grand Marnier), and 24k Gold (Scotch) Diamond Chocoutre Collection.  The diamond is a piece of rock candy, and the 24k Gold one has edible gold on it.
Chocoutre White Chocolate Heel.  Too pretty to eat, right?

In the end, we brought home treats like:

Matcha green tea and seasame bark
Chocolate dipped orange slices
Chocolate covered peanut brittle
Brandy chocolate covered cherry

Jewel Collection truffles.  Apparently you could choose from flavors, but we didn't get a choice and we couldn't tell what the flavors were...but they were yummy!

Day 2:  Mindy's Hot Chocolate is a quaint little restaurant downtown that offers brunch, lunch, dinner, and of course desserts.  It kind of reminds me of Urth Caffe but with a more sophisticated edge.
Half and Half: 1/2 espresso, 1/2 dark hot chocolate.  So yummy especially with the homemade marshmallow.
Affogato: 2/3 medium, 1/3 dark with a scoop of coffee cocoa nib ice cream.  I liked the contrast and presentation.
Warm brioche donuts with hot fudge and caramel popcorn.  The fudge was very rich but the donuts weren't exactly my favorite.  I preferred munching on the caramel corn.
Chocolate #1: Warm chocolate souffle tart, salted caramel ice cream, and housemade pretzels.  Sooo good and oozing with chocolate!
